My latest recording is now up for streaming and downloading on my Bandcamp site. It’s called The Universe, The Devil, The Hermit . . . and it’s a 20-minute piece inspired by the cards of the same name from Aleister Crowley’s Thoth tarot. Next to Thoss, it’s probably one of the most dense synthesizer/drone recordings I’ve done. I encourage you to listen through a capable system to experience the full depth and dynamics! Please enjoy!
And they are just sounds. Not just any old sounds–but just sounds, really, after all. Different arrangements of synthesis presented in very raw form. These are the final reports from me, soundwise, for the year. I plan to do more Joyless noise and related volumes next year. I also plan on finishing up a long-dormant noisework called Randy & Gary recorded with my friend Jim Tankersley many years ago. But back to the recently-finished Now . . . now.
The first of the last is the third in a series of Joylessly Noisy musicks. Joyless Noise, Vol. 3 is the most joyless of the bunch, I believe. It’s also the least noisy, but that doesn’t mean that it’s any less unfriendly.

The second of the last is a split cassette release with Montreal’s Drub on Cuchabata Records. Two sides of intense drone. My track takes up side B (the empty black side). It’s a 28-minute grind down into an emptiness called “Thoss.” The tapes are available from the Drub site and through the player below. They’re a hand-numbered edition of 50, and include a digital download of the recording. You can order from the above folks, or contact me directly in the U.S. I should have my copies later in the month. Downloads, once again, are free or pay-what-you-want.
I’m also in the process of doing a better job of updating my personal website, as well as trimming it down to something very minimal. Feel free to visit there any old time, and write to belittle me as I fail to update it again for 3 or 4 months.
I’ve got a new short story up on The Five Hundred writing group site. It’s called Normal Horrible. I’ll go on and tell you that there’s a crummy oversight in proofreading on my part that completely ruins the story. Feel free to write me and make me feel shitty about that also.

Been working hard on another volume of Joyless Noise. Submitted a finished track called “Fog Dial” to the awesome Psycho Raidio. And, yes, that is the way it is spelled. It’s a channel that streams music to play played alongside a killer boardgame called Psycho Raiders. But that’s another story…
I’m hoping to have Joyless Noise, Volume 3 competed and available by Xmas. In preparation for this, and in joyless celebration of cheapness in a cheap world, I’ve changed all my Bandcamp music back to a free/pay-what-you-want model. Piles of music and hard work out there for anyone who cares or wants it.
I’m gonna stack some players up for your listening (dis)pleasure. Try playing them all at once. At work. Or to run off people who won’t leave your house. Or as a soundtrack backing up you doing something bad.
Oh, this feels like one of those “I haven’t blogged in a long time” sorta things with this one, but I am going to forge onward in a very free way, and not bother catching up . . . unless the following feels like catching-up.
I have written a few more weird things at The Five Hundred . . . and you can find them there, with a little spelunking, if you are so-inclined. Did that need to be hyphenated? I like it that way . . . so I think so. Am I using too many ellipses? Or is it ellipseses? Smeech? Brandon? Marvin?
I don’t know what I think about the new Interpol. Hell, I didn’t know what I thought about the last Interpol. Is this everyone’s experience who used to or perhaps even now still likes Interpol? Does this matter?
I have been enjoying the latest Opeth quite a bit, and I don’t know why any former fan of them is any more outdone with this one than they were with Heritage. Come on! It’s good! Have you forgotten what good is? Have you not seen this coming? Please!

I feel like my blogs will have this format/non-format for a while. Maybe it’s stupid, but maybe I haven’t blogged in so long because blog is such a stupid word. And also because I felt like it had to have some kind of format. Maybe all this is stupid. Form is emptiness is form is stupid is emptiness is blog is stupid.
Nothing is as stupid as The Memory Hole, however. Stupidly brilliant. I will leave you with one of their offerings into the nothingness, and let you dig deeper.
The February submissions for The Five Hundred, a flash fiction writing group that I participate in, have just been posted. This month’s prompt was “Tear it down and try again.” My story is Last Days In The World Of Legs. We also received a special 100-word prompt this month of “A thousand days gone.” My submission for that one is Body/Steam. The group is joined this month by two of my friends and fellow bloggers Stephen McClurg and Matt Wilson. Steven’s In The Cup Of The Beholder and Ghazal For The Missing, and Matt’s Off Air Dreams are the best of the entire batch, in my opinion.
I’m also just about ready to release the first in a series of noise recordings call Joyless Noise. The series artwork over on the left was created by Austin Gaines. This first volume was created mostly with analog synthesizers, and will feature a collaborative track with Dylan Hawes-Glynn from The Most Amazing Century Of Science. Each release in the series will be available on Bandcamp for $1. More details as the release approaches.
