I’m one song away from finishing up a new full-length solo recording that I’ve been working on all year. It’s the final piece of a trilogy of recordings that began a couple of years ago. It’s been lots of work, but it’s turning out to be the best of the three. More on that later. And here.
I ask myself . . . if there hadn’t been so much distractingly great music coming out this year, would I have been able to focus more on my own? I’m not complaining! I’m so happy that there are so many fantastic bands putting out such solid music. I wanted to share a few.
If you don’t have Spotify and can’t get some of the links to work, definitely check out a free account. It’s been a great way for me to discover new music and track down bands so that I can pick up their releases. Highly-recommended. Let’s dive in…
VHOL –s/t: Such gloriously vicious, wickedly ugly music, fronted by Yob’s Mike Scheidt! Heavy, dissonant and just about everything I want out of this kind of music.
Next up, Dawn Of Midi’s Dysnomia. Lovely, repetitive, meditative, stark, dark, addictive. I can’t think of better ways to describe this incredible recording.
Pinkish Black’s Razed To The Ground is a gritty, distorto synth nightmare, thickly-bristled with inspired ideas and evil melodies. Fast becoming a favorite listen for me.
Montgomery, AL’s own Hail To The Titans have released a super-sharp slab of vinyl called Fig., and its two lengthy tracks are moody and contemplative, with bombastic layers of guitar and a slamming rhythm section. So great!
And, finally, Era, the latest by Disappears, has become one of my favorite recordings. This collection of songs has such rich atmosphere and space. It’s music that puts me in a reflective mood and makes me feel great . . . like all of the best music does! The title track on here has got to be one of the best songs of all time.
I could go on forever with links, but I’ll stop there. I hope you hear something that turns you on!
